All who have an interest in antique aircraft are welcome to attend, and fly-ins are welcome!
The Northwest Missouri Chapter of the Antique Airplane Association will have their monthly member’s meeting on Sunday, April 13th, at 2pm at the airport. There will be a cookout followed by the meeting. This meeting will be the annual election meeting, and further planning for the May 3rd pancake breakfast will be discussed. All are welcome!!
And speaking of fly-in, the Chapter’s first fly-in of the year is on the schedule! Join us May 3rd for a pancake breakfast to benefit the Chapter’s new aviation scholarship in memory of Barb Kirkpatrick and Don Sharp, two founding NW MO AAA members and longtime supporters of the Excelsior Springs Airport. The Chapter will serve pancakes, sausage, coffee and orange juice from 7:30 to 10:30 am for donations toward this scholarship fund. Fly-in or drive-in, all are welcome! Look for more details about this new annual scholarship, to be awarded to a deserving college student pursuing a career in aviation.

The July meeting of the Northwest Missouri Antique Airplane Association will be held Sunday, July 21st at the Excelsior Springs Airport (3EX) at 2pm. We’ll be cooking burgers and dogs, and fly-ins are welcome! You need not be a member to attend (but we sure hope you’ll consider joining!). The business meeting will begin once everyone has had a chance to eat. We’ll be discussing final plans and details for the upcoming BBQ on the River Fly-In. I’m sure once the meeting is over that we’ll spend some time buzzing around the pattern if the weather is nice as well. We hope to see you at the airport this Sunday!
Despite a forecast for strong winds developing by 9am gusting to almost 30 knots, the Northwest Missouri AAA Chapter still ended up with 15 airplanes and dozens of cars from Excelsior residents for the June 22nd pancake breakfast – the hangar was packed! Preparations now begin for our big annual fly-in, the 13th Annual BBQ on the River Fly-In to be held August 17th. We hope to make this year bigger and better and while we were thrilled to have 70 airplanes in attendance last year, we are going for 100 this year! Look for updates on this blog page, and full information posted on the fly-ins link.

The newly-formed, 3EX-based Northwest Missouri Chapter of the Antique Airplane Association held their inaugural meeting on Saturday, February 16th with about 30 attendees present. We even had a couple of airplanes from Fulton, Missouri drop in for the lunch and meeting! Thanks go to Marlyn Atkinson for providing much of the food and the grilling expertise, and to AAA Executive Director Brent Taylor for driving down from Blakesburg, Iowa for the meeting. We really appreciated his input in getting the chapter off on the right foot!
It was decided that meetings would be held the 3rd Sunday of every month at 3pm, however it should be noted that next month’s meeting will be held on Saturday, March 16th immediately following the pancake breakfast fly-in due to some conflicts with Sunday being St. Patrick’s Day. Chapter dues were set at $20 per family/year and a membership form is being designed; and will be posted to this site when available. (Please note that AAA membership is required to be a member in the chapter, you can download the AAA membership form here.)
The floor was then opened for nominations for the 2013 slate of officers. Nominations will be taken until March 1st; if you are interested in running for office please email
info@thenew3EX.com. Nominations thus far are:
President: Dan Kirkpatrick
Vice-President: Brett Lovett
Secretary: Sarah Dickerson
Treasurer: Marlyn Atkinson
Directors (2 seats): Jerry Woods, Bruce Bellemore
The election will take place on the March 16th meeting immediately following the pancake breakfast (10am).
We hope to see all of you at the pancake breakfast fly-in as well as the AAA meeting that follows! Below is the flyer for the event, you can also download a pdf to email to friends or post at your airport here!
Supporters of the Excelsior Springs Memorial Airport have much to be pleased with after last week’s City Council work session and this Monday’s City Council meeting, where the City Council voted 5-0 to approve a resolution to make improvements at the airport, including changes to address discrepancies listed on the most recent FAA inspection report conducted by MoDOT (the Missouri Department of Transportation), as well as seeking grant monies via an application due February 15th for a new runway overlay at the airport.
Two MoDOT employees, including the inspector who conducted the inspection at 3EX late last summer, spent the afternoon prior to Monday’s Council meeting at the airport, looking at trees and obstructions that could be addressed and how best to address them (topping, removal, etc); they also were available to answer Councilmember’s questions regarding the report and the potential upgrades needed at the field.
This is an extremely positive step in the right direction for the future of this airport, and a huge swing in direction in the approach the City is taking toward the field. Airport supporters and board members alike look forward to a bright future at 3EX, and a collaborative approach with the City to make this airport the best it possibly can be, and a true asset to the City and its residents.
We will of course update the blog as improvements are made and the grant process for the runway overlay gets underway.
Do plan to join us at the airport on Saturday, February 16th at 12pm for a planning meeting of the newly-formed Northwest Missouri Chapter of the Antique Aircraft Association. The first slate of officers will be elected, and monthly meeting dates/times will be set. General discussion about 2013 activities will also take place, as this new AAA Chapter will assume fly-in and activity planning at the airport. 2013 dates may be tentative for a while as the Chapter awaits news from the city on a timetable for repairs/work and a possible runway overlay. Stay tuned! (you can check the most current NW MO AAA Chapter news by clicking the Chapter link in the menu above.)
